Dr. (Mrs.) Rama Sofat retired as Professor and Head of the Obstetrics & Gynaecology Department and Director of the Family Planning Department at Dayanand Medical College & Hospital, Ludhiana, after more than 30 years of meritorious service. She established Dr. Rama Sofat Hospital on College Road, Ludhiana, where she continues to guide advanced obstetric, gynaecological, laparoscopic, hysteroscopic, and fertility care alongside her son Dr. Amit Sofat and daughter-in-law Dr. Ruchika Sofat.
Experience & achievements
- Pioneer in starting colposcopy in Punjab at DMC in 1985, hysteroscopy in 1995, and operative laparoscopy in 1990 — and conducted workshops across the region.
- Awarded MNAMS by the National Academy of Medical Sciences in 1996.
- Nominated Woman of the Year 2000 by the American Biographical Institute, USA.
- Awarded Millennium Fellowship of the Indian College of Obstetrics & Gynaecology in 2000.
- Over 50 publications in national and international journals and more than 60 papers at regional, national, and international conferences.
- Unanimously elected Vice President of the North India Obstetrics & Gynaecology Society (FOGSI) for seven consecutive terms between 1988 and 2000.
- Conferred the FOGSI Lifetime Achievement Award in 2022.
- Life member of FOGSI, ISOPARB, and the Oncology Society of India.
- Taught thousands of MBBS students and hundreds of postgraduate students; served as examiner and paper setter for major universities in North India.
