Recurrent Implantation Failure

Learn what couples may consider after recurrent implantation failure, including IVF cycle review, individualised evaluation and emotional support.

Understanding Recurrent Implantation Failure

Recurrent Implantation Failure (RIF) refers to repeated failure of an embryo to implant despite appropriately conducted IVF treatment. It can be emotionally difficult, but it does not mean that successful pregnancy is impossible.

Reviewing Previous IVF Cycles

After repeated implantation failure, couples may consider a systematic review of previous IVF cycles, including:

  • Embryo quality and development – including blastocyst development and, when appropriate, genetic factors.
  • Uterine evaluation – to look for fibroids, polyps, adhesions, adenomyosis or other abnormalities.
  • Endometrial assessment – including thickness and development in the transfer cycle.
  • Sperm and egg factors – particularly age, ovarian reserve and relevant male fertility factors.
  • Embryo-transfer review – including the technique and any difficulties encountered during previous transfers.
  • Medical and hormonal factors that may affect implantation or early pregnancy.
  • Additional tests or treatments selectively, when there is a clear clinical indication rather than routinely.

Emotional Support Matters

Repeated treatment failure can cause significant stress, anxiety and emotional exhaustion. Fertility counselling and psychological support can help couples cope with the journey and make informed decisions about further treatment.

Most importantly, there is no single test or treatment that can explain every case of implantation failure. The next treatment plan should be individualised after reviewing the couple’s complete fertility history.

At Rama Sofat Hospital & Ruchi Test Tube Baby Centre, Ludhiana, couples with recurrent implantation failure can receive a comprehensive evaluation and personalised fertility treatment plan based on their individual circumstances.
