Pelvic Pain in Women
Pelvic pain is pain felt in the lower abdomen or pelvic region. It may be occasional or persistent and can arise from the reproductive organs, urinary system, digestive tract or pelvic muscles.
Common Causes of Pelvic Pain
- Ovarian cysts
- Endometriosis
- Fibroids or adenomyosis
- Pelvic infection
- Urinary or bowel problems
- Ovulation or menstrual cramps
- Pregnancy-related conditions
- Adhesions following previous surgery
When Should You See a Gynaecologist?
Seek medical evaluation if pelvic pain is persistent, recurrent, severe, or associated with abnormal bleeding, fever, unusual vaginal discharge, painful intercourse, vomiting or difficulty passing urine or stool.
Your gynaecologist may recommend a pelvic examination, ultrasound, blood tests or other investigations to identify the underlying cause.
Treatment
Treatment depends on the cause and may include medications, hormonal therapy, antibiotics for infections, or minimally invasive procedures such as laparoscopy or hysteroscopy when indicated.
