Menopause
Menopause is a natural stage in a woman’s life when menstrual periods permanently stop, marking the end of the reproductive years. It is diagnosed after 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period, when there is no other medical cause.
Common Symptoms of Menopause
Women may experience:
- Hot flashes and night sweats
- Irregular periods before menopause
- Mood changes and irritability
- Sleep disturbances
- Vaginal dryness or discomfort during intercourse
- Reduced sexual desire
- Urinary symptoms
- Changes in bone and heart health over time
When Should You See a Gynaecologist?
Consult a gynaecologist if symptoms are affecting your daily life or if you experience any vaginal bleeding after menopause. Postmenopausal bleeding should always be evaluated.
Menopause Management
Treatment is individualised according to your symptoms, age and health. It may include lifestyle changes, non-hormonal medications, vaginal treatments or menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) when appropriate.
Regular attention to bone health, cardiovascular health, nutrition and physical activity is also important during and after menopause.
